At our November 1st worship service, the Cereal United Church offered their appreciation for all that Vera Rude has done for us. The service was followed by a Pot Luck lunch hosted by the Cereal Golden Centre.
Vera has been a long time member of our church and the Cereal Community. She has now moved in Oyen and we just wanted to say thank you for all she has done for us.
Here is an excerpt from today's reflection:
"Her church and community know that Vera's choice to move to Oyen is the best decision for her and support it whole heartedly.
However, we have suddenly realized how much she has silently been doing for us. I can best speak for the church. Our sense of hospitality was shaken when, all of a sudden, coffee didn’t magically appear on a Sunday morning! Not only that, but there were dead flies all over the carpet (had the vacuum cleaner stopped jumping out of the closet by itself to complete that task?). How would the piano tuner and fire extinguisher guy get into the church to do their work? Then we had our first Soup and Sandwich lunch of the fall…who made sure the tables were up? Who checked the supplies? Who knew where the baskets were for the crackers? Who booked the Golden Center? Who had the key? Who knew?... Vera did!
These are just a few examples of the hospitality and service that Vera has given to our community. I know that she has been an integral part of the Golden Center…I have seen her catching people in many places to buy their tickets for the lunches or the field trip. She was one of the whirlwinds and dedicated folk who worked so hard to get the history book updated in time for the Cereal Centennial celebrations"
Seventy one people came to the church to join us today. As amazing testament to the impact she has had on her community, neighbours and friends.
As part of our Gratitude we offered Vera some small gifts: An Angel pin; a picture of the church signed by all those present; and a copy of the prayer that Vera and the UCW have closed meetings with for years.
Thanks Vera, for reminding us of the importance of service for others...just because we can and because it is what God would have us do.
